MINUTES OF EDISON PTSA BOARD MEETING October 13, 2009
The meeting was called to order by Teresa Hannah.
Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the September 8, 2009 PTSA Board meeting were approved. (Motion by Jill Parr; Second by Monica Martin; Unanimous Approval)
Treasurer’s Report: Cynthia Steverson presented the September 30, 2009 report.
Council Delegate: Teresa Hannah reported on last council meeting.
VP-High School: Jill Parr reported. We will have a speaker, David Bernson, in January and another speaker in the spring. Will need many test monitors for testing that begins in the spring. VP-Middle School: Monica Martin reported, volunteers needed to help with shadow days.
Committee Reports: Website – Lori Stewart reported Power School is up and running. Grade reps can have control over their website page, training available. Photos are always needed.
Membership/Directory – Stacy Loeffler reported they are working on database for CD and will need help with data entry for this project.
Hospitality – Brooke Hargrove reported, taking volunteers for parent/teacher conference meals and teacher breakfasts.
Unfinished Business: Fieldhouse Sound System - report by Roberta Clark. Final bid is $17,739.27. TPS is paying for installation with bond funds. Plans continue to advance. Grant money not available. Board approved using Special Project funds to purchase sound system. (Motion by Lori Stewart; Second by Lynne Smith; motion passed, not unanimous) Landscaping - report by Lynne Smith. Trees, shrubs and grass to be planted October 16.
New Business: AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination program described by Laura McElhaney. Edison Reads a Million Campaign – described by Susan Griffin, taking place in MS and HS, involving all students and teachers. $100 requested for display case items, Board approved. (Motion by Jill Parr; Second by Marilyn Cox; unanimous approval) America’s Choice program – described by S. Griffin, ACT based program occurring in math and reading classes. Weekly E-mails – Marilyn Cox discussed how long notices to stay on, plan to delete after one month. Volunteer Coordinator – Hilda Lissonet reported as new coordinator. Requested all hours be logged or emailed to Monica Martin.
Principal’s Report: HS did not meet AYP, on probation. Parent-teacher conferences next week. Tina Hamm, MS librarian awarded Librarian of the Year.
President’s Report: Teresa Hannah reporting. Portrait photographer will be offering packages at discount for Edison seniors. Shadow days – parent volunteers needed to host parents of shadowing students.
MS Faculty Representative: Susan Griffin reported winter play will be “Our Miss Brooks”.
HS Faculty Representative: Gayle Wallace reported on Homecoming preparations.
Grade Rep Reports: 6th Grade- Dry Gulch a success 7th Grade – Riverside Walk on November 13. 8th Grade – no report. 9th Grade – Working on homecoming float. 10th – Fundraiser underway, had successful party. 11th – Poinsettias sales underway. 12th – Poinsettias sales, parent mixer October 24th.

meeting was called to order by Teresa Hannah.
Secretary’s Report:
Minutes from the August 18, 2009 PTSA Board meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:
Cynthia Steverson presented the August 31, 2009 report. The only
change was a decrease in expected income from College Conection.
Committee
Reports:
College
Connection – Sunday,
September 13, 1-4pm at Central Park Hall, Expo Square. Need
volunteers before, during and after event. Nancy Chandler
coordinating. 135 colleges and other institutions attending.
MS Hoodie Sales
– Have had much interest in sales, no totals yet. Will need
volunteers when hoodies are ready for pick up.
TCPTA
– report by Jeannie Farrar. Last meeting August 25th.
Lenora Brown is Council Liason. Proposal made that Edison PTSA
provide refreshments for one councile meeting.

Website –
Donna Dement reported website is looking great, photos are always
needed.
Membership/Directory –
Stacy Loeffler reported sales are continuing and will occur at HS
Back to School Night.
Reflections
– Ellen Espigares is chair. Theme is “Beauty Is…”. The
deadline for submissions will be in December.
Old Business
– Fieldhouse sound system report by Roberta Clark. Plans continue
to advance. Estimated cost $17,000. Grant may be obtained for video
capability. Final approval is pending.
New Business
Chinese
Exchange Project - Jill
Parr requested for up to $500 to be used for support of the Chinese
Exchange Students including admission fees, program reimbursements,
welcome and/or departure parties.

Landscaping
Project – Report on
progress by Stephanie Martell, copies of plans for Phase 1 and Phase
2 were circulated.
Principal’s
Report: Mrs. Vernon
reporting.
Test
scores for EOI and OCCT available. Edison made AYP in every area
except one (appeal being made).
New
state mandate that students must pass 4 EOI exams to graduate.
Current
enrollment is 1170 in HS, 932 in MS, may receive NCLB transfers but
space is available.
MS
is a Title I school and will receive >$200,000 in federal
funding.
New
program coming called AVID targeting 9th
grade classes to encourage college enrollment
TPS
testing calendar now available
PSAT
October 14th,
school will be in session that day but not October 19th

PTSA quarterly print newsletter will be out this month, deadline

Wallace reported on more cooperation between HS and MS teachers,
improving school environment. Announced Homecoming dates—MS

Cynthia Steverson presented the budget for fiscal year 2010, and
reports from 6-30-09 and 7-31-09. Audit completed this summer with
