October 2, 2009

Dear Parents,

Welcome to another exciting season of Edison tennis!  We would first like to express our appreciation for your help and support of the team both last year and so far this year.  We also have a lot of new players and freshmen that are joining the high school program for the first time, and we welcome you to the Edison tennis family!  We feel confident that we have a lot to build on for this year and we’re confident that we will again have players that will represent Edison at the state tennis tournament.  Congratulations again to past state tournament participants including, 2009 season’s Ian Jones and Natalie Fore, and 2008 qualifiers Brian Friloux and Allan Cole.

Also, as most of you know by now Edison Tennis is very lucky to have two head coaches to head the programs.  This is of great benefit to your son or daughter, and allows practices, tournaments, and matches to run smoothly by enabling more individual attention to the players.  Tyler will head the boys program, and Rebecca will head the girls program; however, if there are any matters that need to be discussed that relates to both programs please contact both coaches so they are both aware of any issues.

We are currently working on our season schedule/calendar and will be sending that information out as soon as it is finalized.  This should be early January.  We are looking at adding in as many tournaments, hosting another Quad Tournament, as possible to allow maximum matches and dates to be allowed by OSSAA rules and regulations.  This also allows a solid record to compare for seeding purposes at conferences and state tournaments and as much match play for players at all levels.

Please make your student-athlete aware that students are expected to be in attendance at all home matches regardless of opponent team size and/or if the athlete knows in advance that they will not be competing in a specific match.  Home matches will usually begin by 3:30 or upon arrival of opponent.  Athletes will carpool to away matches by student drivers and/or coach, according to choice given on signed transportation release at beginning of year.  We will inform the students as to who will be traveling to and competing in the away matches as they approach.

We are currently looking at uniforms to purchase for both the boys and girls teams.  We will let you know the cost of the uniforms once we decide on the style (last year the boys paid around $65 for a shirt and shorts, while the girls allotted for only a t-shirt with an approximate $15 cost).  Since the varsity girls’ tennis team will look a lot different with six seniors graduating from last year, the girls will more than likely be asked to purchase a whole new uniform.

Finally, the course syllabus will be shared with your son or daughter during our annual “tennis welcome” party.  We are unsure of date and location at this time, but it will more than likely occur in November at the residence of senior Robert Fries, and Booster Club President, Bob.  We’ll update you as soon as a date is confirmed.  It is mandatory that the athlete attends this meeting!

Remember, as a pre-requisite for enrollment in tennis all paperwork is required to be completed by Friday, January 8th.  This includes a physical, sportsmanship form, transportation, and emergency release/consent form.  Students will also be required to sign a tennis contract for the season. If all paperwork is not turned in by the 8th your son or daughter will be withdrawn from tennis, so don’t delay with physicals because exceptions will not be made.   We are also basing enrollment in tennis on the following: attending optional fall practices (going on now until the weather gets bad, every Tuesday/Thursday without inclement weather), athletic eligibility, attendance at “welcome party.”  If you have any questions on these policies or need a paperwork packet to complete please have your son or daughter see Coach Bell or Coach Madden with this.

Edison tennis is again offering business recognition by purchasing a banner to be hung on the tennis courts.  This is a great opportunity for your business to be recognized.  Initial purchase for a banner will be $200 to get them printed and hung up for one calendar year.  Each year after that would be $100.  If you know a business that would be interested in purchasing a banner please let us know.

As always, the tennis teams have little money in their allotted budgets for season play.  We will be doing fundraisers such as selling concessions to help add money into our budget.  Last year approximately $300 for both programs was added into the budgets by working concessions during middle school basketball games.  The dates that are required for adult supervision that we are asking for volunteers for, as well as student help are:

  • Wednesday, 7 Oct (NEXT WEEK!)   not enough volunteers!
  • Monday, 26 Oct
  • Tuesday, 27 Oct
  • Wednesday, 11 Nov

The requirements for concessions sales are the following: an adult MUST be present the entire time.  Concessions should start at approximately 5:30 and end at 8:30/8:45, but no later than 9pm.  The athletic director will start the major food items like chili and cheese and will stock the drinks.  This means everything is there ready to go, we just need people there to hand out items and take money.  It is suggested that parents and students split shifts, so we’d like to see two adult volunteers per night and four athletes per day.  Shifts should run approximately 5:30-7:00, and 7:00-8:30/8:45.  Coaches are not expected to take these shifts.  It is the students’ responsibility and up to booster club to raise money in order for tournaments to be scheduled.  If volunteers cannot be found we lose the opportunity to make money and will have to cut tournaments.

Like last year, the administration has advised that there will be no money left over if tennis isn’t able to raise all the money needed to last until the end of the season.  This means that tournaments may end up getting cut if the students aren’t on board to fundraise, so please encourage your son or daughter to help out with fundraising through working concessions.

We couldn’t have made it through the season last year without the support from parents, monetary donations, business recognition banners, anonymous donations, companies sponsoring hotel rooms, parents helping with snacks at tournaments, etc.

Thank you for all you’ve done to contribute!  Next time you’re by Edison take a peek at the new court benches that were made and donated by the Fries family- they make the courts look great and will look great with the new net the Clark family donated.

We look forward to seeing you throughout the season!  Please feel free to email us at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Rebecca L. Madden                            Mr. Tyler W. Bell
